Understanding Differences CelebrationYour Are Invited to Our
Understanding Differences Celebration The 4/5’s are wrapping up an Understanding Differences Unit that focused on the uniqueness of humans and what challenges and strengths this creates. Students developed a better understanding of the people around them and, hopefully, themselves. Students participated in reading groups that focused their study on a specific realistic fiction text about a difference. Students learned about varying mental and physical abilities, homelessness, race, ethnicity, and much more. Students had several projects that they were working on during this unit. Students created posters that tell about who they are, what makes them unique, and some of their beliefs. In addition, students wrote a reflective essay about an event in their own lives and derived meaning from it. Students used the writing process to develop this into a finished product. The ⅘ team collaborated on making an iMovie with the help of Vermont Folklife and some students wrote responses to book group books or “Where I’m From” poems. The Understanding Differences unit has obvious connections to social justice, which we hope will promote empathy and understanding in our school community. Also, students continued to learn about the importance of written and oral communication, which has been a schoolwide focus at the SA this year. We would like to invite you to celebrate our students’ hard work on June 1 at 8:30 in the ⅘ classrooms. We will be premiering their iMovie and will have their other work on display. Refreshments will be served and if you would like to bring or donate food, please let your child’s teacher know. If you are able the students would love to have a variety of cultural foods at our celebration as befitting the unit. Thank you and we hope to see you there! Sincerely, The ⅘ Team |
